Fabric suggestions
420D to 500D nylon fabrics are a good weight to durability to price point. Laminates give a pleasant stiffness (X-Pac™ VX21, ECOPAK™ EPX200). Modern nylon 6.6 210D ripstop nylons, Gridstop etc are good for saving weight. Could go as heavy as 1000D or ballistic nylon if durability is the top concern. Most commercial bags are made from low price 600D polyester.
▢ You could make the zipper panel out of a tight mesh if you wanted breathability for your boots.
▢ The instructions don’t describe including a liner fabric as it has limited value on a simple bag like this, but you could double up each piece using a liner fabric such as 70D nylon, and include thin foam between for padding.
Fabric requirements
1 yard or meter of outer fabric
Supplies
The webbing and other ‘narrow goods’ purchase quantities are rounded up to the nearest metre
or yard, which is usually the minimum length you can purchase.
Webbing
1 inch (25 mm) width. Recommended Purchase: 1 metre/1 yard
▢ 1 – 12 inch (30.5 cm): Small skate bag
▢ 1 – 13 inch (33 cm): Large skate bag
▢ 1 – 14 inch (35.6 cm): Ski Boot Bag
▢ 1 – 60 inch (152.4 cm): Shoulder strap
Binding Tape or Grosgrain
1 inch (25mm) width. Recommended purchase quantity: 2 metres/2 yards
Edge binding for all the inner seams. A binding tape with a slight stretch is highly
recommended due to the curves, such as herringbone binding tape. You can make it work
with grosgrain however the result won’t be quite as clean.
2 – 4 inch (10.2 cm): Loops for shoulder strap attachment. Could use webbing instead.
Hardware
2 Swivel hooks. Matched to your shoulder strap webbing width. There are many
alternatives you could use, such as carabiners, gatekeepers, slik clips.
2 D rings. Matched to your webbing/grosgrain width. Attachment point on
the bag for swivel hooks and carabiners.Optional depending on should
attachment buckle chosen.
1 Triglide. For shoulder strap adjustment
zipper
▢ 1 – 26 ½ inch (67.3 cm): This is the longest you’ll need for any bag pattern. Trim to panel
length if making the small skate bag.
▢ 1 – Slider to match the zipper. Reverse slider if using waterproof zipper.
