Fabric suggestions
RECOMMENDED FABRICS:
• Woven fabrics without stretch that can ideally be steam ironed. Best is
cotton, linen, viscose, wool, polyamide or blends thereof. For
example: cotton canvas, upholstery fabric, or winter jacket/coat fabric.
• Thin or delicate fabrics can be backed up with soft woven fusible
interfacing.
NOT RECOMMENDED:
• stretch fabrics (jersey, knits), velvets (cotton, polyamide, silk), satin, sheer
weavings like chiffon, tulle or lace. Vinyl, genuine leather. These materials
may require additional sewing techniques and/or advanced sewing skills.
Working with these materials is not described in the guide.
Fabric requirements
For 140 cm wide fabric: 2m shell fabric, 2m lining for all sizes
Supplies
Other materials & tools
• Soft woven fusible interfacing (e.g., Vlieseline/Vilene G785, Pellon G785
or similar)
• 5-8 buttons with 0.7-1” (1.8-2.5 cm) diameter. Or use front clasps,
corsetry hooks & eyes, or loops & buttons
• A scrap of leather/vinyl in upholstery quality for the front toggles. Get
circa 6x8” (15x20 cm). For thin materials, double the amount needed and
glue both layers wrong-sides together
• 7.5y (7m) piping (optional). Alternatively, get 57x12” (150x 30 cm) of soft
woven fabric or vinyl and cut it into stripes to make your own piping
• Sharp scissors for fabric
• Tailor’s chalk or other suitable marker for your materials
• Fabric clips/fasteners or pins. Clips work better with leather/vinyl.
• Needle & thread in matching color to your materials
• Ironing station
• Spray glue or contact glue suitable for leather/vinyl
• Hole punching tools for leather/vinyl
• Box cutter or sharp scissors for leather
• For sticky leather/vinyl a Teflon® sewing foot may be helpful.
Alternatively, gently brush the material with common face powder and
wipe the powder off with a moist cloth afterwards
